Tadeusz Dominik
Tadeusz Dominik was born 1928 in Szymanów. He was a student of professor Jan Cybis in the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw from 1946-1951, receiving his diploma 1953. Even before receiving his degree from the Academy he was named assistant of professor Wacław Waśkowski in the Graphics Department. He moved through each level in the Academy from assistant to full professor (1988). Twice, in the years 1971-1974 and 1987-1989, he was dean of the Painting Department. Immediately after his studies he was engaged in making graphics, but from the later 50s on he has been mainly a painter, sometimes also making tapestries. He made his painting debut in 1951 at the seventh exhibit of painting in Radom. His first individual exhibit was at 'Zacheta' in the year 1957. His International debut was at the 27th biennale in Venice in 1956 - a presentation of his Cycle of woodcuts entitled 'Maternity'. He is the recipient of many prestigious prizes, among them: second prize in the All-Poland exhibit of young artists (1955, Warsaw, Arsenal), first prize in the Festival International d'Art Contemporain (1964, Monte Carlo), Jan Cybis prize (1973), Rowney prize (1973). He has held stipends from the French government (1958-1959) and the Ford Foundation (1962). His work has been shown in over one hundred exhibits of polish art abroad. The wor of Tadeusz Dominik can be found in the Polish National Museums in Warsaw, Kraków, Poznań, Wrocław, and Szczecin, in the Wyczółkowski Museum in Bydgoszcz in the Regional Museum in Toruń, in the Lubuski Museum in Zielona Góra, in the Mazurian Museum in Olsztyn, the 'Studio' Center of Art in Warsaw, in the 'Zachęta' Gallery in Warsaw, in the Museum of Modern Art in Nowym Jorku, the Museum of Fine Arts in Caracas, the Albertina in Vienna, the Stedlijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Museum of Skopie, as well as private collections all over the world.
